Kilimanjaro Tips – Trekking Poles

Trekking poles, will I need them?

There are many discussions for both the advantages and disadvantages of taking trekking poles.

The simple answer is yes, take them. Why?

There has been plenty of research as to the benefits of using poles from correcting the posture to reducing the stress and strain on our knees. The other advantages of using ‘trekking poles’ on this trek is  that  it aids momentum and on summit night you can use them to lean on and help you to the summit.

If not in use they can be stowed on the side of your day sack.

Many brands and styles around. Look for the telescopic variety which are normally in 3 sections and the height can be adjusted to the terrain (shorter on the uphold / longer on the downhills).

Typically made from aluminium you can find poles made from material such as titanium , which comes with a nice price tag. The most popular brand us ‘Leki’ a German make and some would say a pioneer in the trekking pole world.

Other brands are available and can be bought on line or any outdoor sports shops stock them. Price range from £10 ($14) to £180 ($265) a pair.

If you don’t want to splash out poles can be hired from Moshi and we can arrange this for you.
